4:01 am
and good morning, america. what a wild night in boston. look at these pictures. these are the suspects. suspect number one in the black hat now dead and there is a massive manhunt under way for the man in the white hat on the run armed and dangerous. here he was last night in a boston 7-eleven. the suspect now in a gray hoodie. >> abc news is confirming that the suspects are from overseas and they are reported to be brothers. we are getting that information in right now. this is a very fluid situation. we're going to have much more as we get it on those suspects. >> our entire abc news team is out in force. we begin with chief investigative correspondent brian ross on the ground all through the night in watertown, brian, a night of gunfire, a night of bombs and now door-to-door search for that dangerous terrorist. >> reporter: that's right, george and dangerous is the word. the fbi described him yesterday as armed and extremely dangerous, those words are certainly true. residents of this town have been told they may not leave their homes.
4:02 am
they cannot go in cars, all stores have been shut. this town is shut down as a terrorist is somewhere in the vicinity. it began with the robbery of a convenience store in cambridge, around 10:30 thursday night. a surveillance camera inside the store captured the image that masked the man identified only five hours earlier as suspect number two in the maratho bombin a short while later on the campus of m.i.t. in cambrie, shoot-ou left an m.i.t. police officer dead. next the two men caredck a merced su and led police on a wild, violent chase through the streets of cambridge into neighboring watertown. >> we have reports that they have explosives here at the scene. there are explosives here at the scene. >> there's definitely hand grenades and automatic gunfire. >> reporter: the two firing weapons and tossing explosives from the car at pursuing police in a residential neighborhood in
4:03 am
watertown where one resident took these pictures showing bullet holes. current tim albin of the massachusetts police department. >> in the exchange of the gunfire we believe that one of the suspects was struck and ultimately taken into custody. >> reporter: suspect number one later died from his wounds. >> he was in a traumatic arrest with cpr ongoing. we spent about 10 to 15 minutes trying to resuscitate this patient at 1:35 in the morning he was pronounced. >> reporter: but suspect number two got away triggering a massive manhunt with residents advised to stay inside and not pick up any strangers as they drove through town. >> we believe this could be a terrorist. we believe this could be a man who's coming here to kill people. we need to get him in custody. >> reporter: there are several thouofcers and national guardsmen who have been assigned to watertown in a
4:04 am
door-to-door search for this terrorist. they don't know wherend everye repor they get you see dozens of cars chasing this way and that way and one of our cell pnef you want to stay alive. >> we see them right there. more on the suspects from pierre thomas. kely brothers and the way they engaged the police is pretty clear they had some training. >> yeah, my senior law enforcement officials are telling me, george, that it's pretty clear these men are paramilitary training. also this very interesting fact. apparently they told the carjacking victim the person that they carjacked that they were, in fact, the marathon bombers. now, law enforcement officials are saying this is the most tense urgent situation that you can think of. that this suspect number two who is the one with the white baseball cap is armed and dangerous and likely to die in a suicide attack. law enforcement offials say it could not be a more dicey, serious situation. also, george, we're also being
4:05 am
given some guidance that law enforcement officials believe that these men were forced to ground in part by the release of those pictures and the video yesterday that created massive pressure on them and some law enforcement officials say that's why they took the action that they probably took last night robbing that 7-eleven. >> and, pierre, these guys were armed up, not only the firepower, the sidearms they had but grenades and another pressure cooker bomb. >> reporter: yes, one law enforcement official said at least one pressure cooker bomb was found at one of the crime scenes and, again, the scene of them throwing grenades and bombs out of the windows of their cars as they were shooting at police, one official said it was like something out of a movie. >> we know that boston is a city on lockdown right now. the situation is so tense overnight that one of our own abc news producers was apprehended by police and detained and questioned. abc's linsey davis is there with our producer, megan chuchmach. good morning to both linsey and
4:06 am
megan. set the scene for us. we know obviously it's understandably tense there. tell us what happened. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy. word from police, the situation in watertown is grave and it is, indeed. we're about a half mile away from where the shoot-out took out and both are closed today with area universities, colleges all of boston public schools closed today. subways and buses in boston suspended until further notice. automated messages went out to people about 2:50 telling them to stay at home. there had been an incident. an area of people about 250,000 people told to stay at home. business owners in watertown told to keep their businesses closed today. so tense here. members of the media told to stay off of their cell phones in certain areas because so it wouldn't give the appearance they would be detonating a many bo. r mannc t firsthand th ten tells about what happened.
4:07 am
>> that's right. i was walking with my camera he s.w.a.t. teams were sense of all congregating when plea officers forced me to the ground, told me they were suspicious of my backpack and thought i mute be the suspect. >> reporter: had to be terrifying. >> heart-stopping. it was like time stood still. >> thank you. we are glad that you are safe and everybody in the area trying to stay safe and certainly a heightened sense of awareness this morning. amy. >> all right, linsey, thanks so much. what a harrowing story. a sample of what's going on. >> a few moments ago i spoke to an eyewitness jeff brayer inside his apartment yards away when the police and suspects came face to face. we're joined now from watertown, massachusetts, by jeff brayer and, jeff, i know you were in your apartment when this all started to unfold. tell us exactly what you saw. >> it was loud, rapid-fire of anywhere from a dozen to two dozen shots followed by an enormous large boom which kind of shook the house. >> so you saw them apprehend the
4:08 am
suspect? >> they had him pinned on the ground with maybe six officers right in front of the vehicle, all this kind of unfolded literally 15 feet from our front door. we noticed about an hour, hour and 15 minutes after the occurrence that there's a bullet hole through my roommate's -- through his wall rig through his calendar and through his computer chair and the slug is actually still laying right in front of his bed at the momengu last? how long are we talking here? >> you know, it was relatively quick, but sustained for at least 90 seconds, perhaps longer, you know, i was woken out of my sleep and it was a consistent, you know, dozen shots right away then there was a loud explosion. >> you seem pretty calm now. it must have been terrifying. >> it was -- it was intense, you know, a lot of the thoughts kind of rushed through your head that kind of incidents of the past
4:09 am
week and what we've been hearing in the news and, oh, my god, is this really happening just outside my door. >> jeff, thank you for giving such a clear account of what happened. let's get more on this from brad garrett, abc news consultant in washington. it's all hands on deck right now and i guess the fbi assumes this guy is going to go down fighting. >> well, there's no reason to think otherwise, george. look at his behavior in the last few hours. i will tell you when you look at the video that was released these guys are calm, cool, directed and know exactly what they're doing like this was preplanned even before the events on monday, so what does that tell us? i think they have been trained someplace because they went into defensive postures when confronted by the police. people who haven't had that sort of training, they either freeze or take off running and these guysre there to f and so i ommi
4:10 am
correct, this guy is not going to be taken alive. >> why didn't they leave the area? >> well, we don't know why they were in the area. for example, they are of college age. are they here on student visas? is that their home? until the photographs were released yesterday at 5:00, they may have felt safe that nobody knew who they were, those pictures were out there but -- so they went on with their lives. now the other thing we don't know, george, were they planning something else? look what happened this morning. you have another pressure cooker, you have potentially i think some other bombs, p ichlp bombs or grenades. >> having the president come into a situation like this yesterday when the killers were still on the loose. >> well, i guess the secret e atst feltdent in the areas he was moving that it wouldn't be an issue but i
4:11 am
certainly understand you would think, hmm, do i really want him to go there? >> given the kind of firepower they appear to have amassed, could they have done this alone? >> well, maybe. my guess is with that type of firepower they may have had associates here and one of the things that the police are really running on right now is who are they connected to, are there othe'm going to use ataveled withhem, individuals connected to them. all of that is extremely important because when you have people this well trained, logic would take you, are there others here of similar training? >> from overseas, some reports they could have been from chechnya. what would that tell you if true? >> obviously chechnya has a huge islamic extremist population and have training camps so it is ve t they were trained in that location prior to coming to the united states.
4:12 am
>> brad garrett, thanks very much. >> let's bring in abc's martha raddatz on the developing information about the suspects' international connections and what we're learning. martha, we believe these two men reported to be brothers are, in fact, from overseas as george mentioned probably from chechnya. tell us what we know at this point. what we've been able to confirm. >> well, i've been told they're either from chechnya or turkey is the way they're leaning at this point. yesterday it was made very clear to me that they were still intensely checking international connections. they said they had the whole of government trying to find out whether the suspects had other people who were helping them. now, in many ways as brad garrett pointed out it was a sophisticated attack. it was preplanned. on the other hand, they didn't underst understand that there would be surveillance cameras at the boston marathon. if they lived there several years certainly people would
4:13 am
recognize them if those pictures got out. in that sense theree caution they may not be affiliated with another cell. they may have done this on their own but it's something they're g at intently. >> certainly how they handled themselves afterwards robbing a 7-eleven wouldn't imply sophistication either. >> reporter: that's exactly right, amy. the fact that they would go in and rob a 7-eleven, have no escape plan but leads you to believe they may have had something else planned in the neighborhood in the boston area. >> and, martha, talk a little about -- because initially there were so many questions about whether or not this was homegrown terrorism. someone from the united states, if this, in fact, is tied to some sort of international ring or at least some sort of international training, what is the impact of that? >> reporter: i think one of the i things they were concerned about, is this the beginning of something? is this going to happen agn?are there? people talking about a domestic
4:14 am
attack felt like it would be over. this would be it. these guys proved their point but the international thing really, really raises the red flag on whether someone else is out there and whether more attacks are planned. >> all right, martha raddatz, we appreciate it. thanks so much. >> more from jonathan karl at the white house. the president briefed through the night, jon. >> reporter: george, it has been a sleepless night for the president, international security and homeland security teams. it was lisa monica, counterterrorism adviser and someone by the way from boston that was tasked with keeping the president up to date overnight on the very latest developments and it has been anround the clock operation. from the very beginning, george, they have been concerned, of course, with what happened in boston, but also with the prospects that something else could be following and that the perpetrators were at large. so you can imagine how closely they are tracking this. wrapping up, george, what has been one of the tensest weeks of the entire obama presidency, just think about it, you had the bombing in boston on monday,
4:15 am
followed by those ricin letters, one addressed to the president, another addressed up to a senator on capitol hill and, of course, you had the explosion in texas. now, obviously nothing connecting those other events with this but all contributing to a very tense week for the homeland security team. >> of course, this is the anniversary muof the waco bombings. i'm here with dan abrams, and let's talk a little more about the possibility that these men may have been from chechnya. that is an area known to be a hotbed of terrorism. >> and the question always is, how closely allied are the ch h chechen terrorists with al qaeda. they've been long fighting in russia. that's been their battle but the issue is that very often they have been bringing in from the arab peninsula and other places other fighters, have carous moussaoui was a recruiter for them.
4:16 am
chechen fighters have long been fighting alongside u.s. forces in 2001 so no question there are questions. the question for law enforcement will be are there specific connections in this case because all i'm talks about is general connections. be careful in talking about specifics. >> united the united states and russia because the chechens have gone after the russian leadership so many times. >> and putin has been saying for years this is a real terrorist problem for the russians and has been so demanding international condemnation more because it's been an ongoing battle where the chechen militants have engaged in clearly terrorist attacks with children being killed in many cases. >> thanks very much. back to josh with the rest of the news. jonathan karl just mentioned dozens of people missiertilizer plant in the town of west,
